Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble to perform at The Shoe Factory in Nicosia as part of the Pharos Contemporary Music Festival
he Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble was founded in March 1990 and comprises leading soloists and virtuosos from the capital city. The ensemble, under its founder Yuri Kasparov will be taking part in the Pharos Contemporary Music Festival and will present two differing programmes on September 15 and September 16 at The Shoe Factory, Nicosia. Kasparov explained: “one of the ensemble’s aims in its creative activities is to broadly promote Russian 20th and 21st century music as well as contemporary Western music. Our repertoire also represents all conceptual trends of contemporary music as well as almost all the chamber works of composers from the 18th century. “I am looking forward to presenting a lecture about Russian Contemporary music on the Saturday morning following our concerts. It will be in a master-class and workshop format especially for young Cypriot instrumentalists.” The Moscow Ensemble can boast over 700 world and Russian premieres and has recorded over 40 cds. Their Cyprus concerts include six world premieres. Kasparov was born in 1955 in Moscow and completed his post-graduate studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory where he worked with composer Edison Denisov. Af-

ter working as musical editorin-chief for the Russian State Central Studio of Documentary Films, he founded the ensemble. Kasparov’s compositions have received many first prizes including the All-Union Composers Competition in 1985, the Guido d’Arezzo International Competition and the Grand Prix at the Henri Dutilleux International Composers Competition. His works have been performed at numerous contemporary music festivals around the world and recorded by renowned ensembles such as the BBC Wales Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Romanian Radio and Ensemble ‘Contrechamps’ amongst oth-
ers. He is also regularly commissioned by distinguished ensembles around the world. The ensemble comprises violinist Mikhail Bolkhovitin, cellist Sergei Astashonok, flautist Ivan Bushuev, clarinettist Oleg Tantsov and pianist Mikhail Dubov. They will perform in various combinations but will appear together for the world premiere of Alexander Khubeev’s Massimo sempre where one of the main features is the unconventional method of playing the instruments. He extends not only the timbral potential but also the pitch ranges. All the unusual methods of playing the instruments are very detailed in the score
which eliminates destructive improvisation leading instead to a maximum concentration of musical events. Khubeev was born in 1986 and graduated from the Perm Musical College in Russia in 2006. He followed post graduate studies at the Moscow state Conservatory and has attended master classes of Russian and foreign composers. Khubeev has already won awards in Italy, Russia and Ukraine and has had his works performed by renowned performers and ensembles such as Guido Arbonelli, the Moscow Contemporary Ensemble, eNesemble and the Ensemble Nostri Temporis amongst others.
