The negotiations which have been handled by the Musicians Union mean that players from April 2011 will be offered 31 weeks work and from April 2012 a minimum annual of 28 weeks. All the players are Musicians Union members and believe that the proposals are artistically damaging and do not represent a viable form of employment long term. MU Regional Organiser for Scotland, Sheena Macdonald said: “We believe the company needs to deliver more for the audiences and communities it serves. We urge the management to work with its employees to find different and innovative ways of increasing productivity and achieving financial stability, which won’t compromise the company artistically, and will ensure the long-term future of Scottish Opera.” • The 116th BBC Proms had a record breaking season with regard to attendances. There were 31 major new commissions and premieres including 14 BBC commissions as well as numerous works by 20th and 21st century composers.
